Northwest Africa 5758 (NWA 5758)

Purchased: 2008 Jun 25

Classification: HED achondrite (Howardite)

History: Purchased from a Moroccan dealer at the meteorite fair in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, France.

Physical characteristics: Individual stone with brownish fusion crust

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Polymict breccia, consisting of small eucrite clasts (ophitic to subophitic) and diogenitic pyroxene fragments (~15 vol%), embedded in related fine-grained clastic material.

Geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene in eucrite clasts: Fs47.7-54.9 (n=39). Diogenitic low-Ca pyroxene: Fs24.8-30.3. Plagioclase composition: An86.7±6.4 (An70.9-94.2; n=20)

Classification: Howardite based on abundance of diogenitic low-Ca pyroxene (>10 vol%)
