Writeup from MB 108:

Sahara 98112

Sahara

Find: 1998

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CH3)

History: A single piece with a mass of 2.0 g was found in 1998 during the Labenne meteorite search in the Sahara.

Physical characteristics: The sample is a small, heavily weathered individual partly covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: (A. Bischoff, IfP) The meteorite shows a chondritic texture of small chondrules, abundant mineral and chondrule fragments, metals, sulfides, very rare small Ca,Al-rich inclusions, and small phyllosilicate-rich fragments embedded into a fine-grained matrix rich in terrestrial Fe-rich weathering products. The rock is a breccia. Chondrules are dominantly cryptocrystalline and typically <0.1 mm in diameter. Relicts of sulfides and FeNi metals are present in matrix and chondrule and fragments. Olivine shows undulatory extinction. Most metal is altered to Fe-hydroxides.

Geochemistry: (K. Klemm and A. Bischoff, IfP). Olivine Fa1-41 (mean Fa16.1±11.4, n=23); low-Ca pyroxene Fs0.5-21Wo0-6 (mean Fs6.2±5.3Wo2.3±1.7, n=26).

Classification: CH3. S2, strong weathering.
