Writeup from MB 111:

Northwest Africa 15232 (NWA 15232)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: May 2022

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CM2)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a group of meteorites hunters in Nouadhibou, Mauritania, in May, 2022.

Physical characteristics: Hundred brownish fragments some with minor fusion crust.

Petrography: Brecciated carbonaceous chondrite composed of small (apparent mean diameter about 230 μm) chondrules, chondrule pseudomorphs, mineral fragments, and rare CAIs, some of which surrounded by fine-grained dust rims set into abundant fine-grained matrix. The Fe-rich matrix contains abundant sulfides and Ca-carbonates.

Geochemistry: Matrix analyses yield FeO=37.1±1.6 wt% and an average total of 80.4±2.1 wt% (5 µm defocused beam, N=4), the latter indicating the presence of hydrous minerals.
