Northwest Africa 14317 (NWA 14317)

Purchased: June 2020

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3)

History: The meteorite was purchased by Adrián Contreras Gómez in Tinduf, Algeria, in June 2020.

Physical characteristics: Dark brown stones. Saw cuts reveal numerous chondrules set in a brown-gray groundmass.

Petrography: Abundant chondrules (average apparent diameter 400±350 µm, N=72) and minor CAIs set in a fine-grained matrix (~45 vol%). Opaque phases are FeNi metal and troilite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa24.8±17.5, range Fa0.9-44.4, Cr2O3=0.13±0.09, Mn/Fe=90±26, n=21); low-Ca Pyroxene (Fs9.8±11.2 Wo1.1±1.0, range Fs0.9-16.5 Wo0.3-1.2, n=11).
