Northwest Africa 14738 (NWA 14738)

Purchased: 2021 Mar

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3)

History: Purchased by Shun-Chung Yang in March 2021 from a dealer in Tindouf, Algeria.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Well-formed, relatively small chondrules (apparent diameter 180±110 µm, N = 24) and angular zoned olivine grains are set in a very fine grained matrix (~40 vol.%) containing kamacite (some altered) and troilite. No CAI were observed.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa15.1±14.1, range Fa0.4-39.5, N = 7; Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.43-0.68 wt.%, mean 0.56±0.10 wt.%, N = 4), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs7.3±5.5Wo1.8±2.2, range Fs2.1-15.1Wo0.6-5.1, N = 4), subcalcic augite (Fs6.2Wo35.2), anorthite in chondrule (An100.0Or0.0).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3).

Specimens: 20.1 g including one polished endcut and one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. S.-C. Yang.
