Northwest Africa 13945 (NWA 13945)

Purchased: March, 2021

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, polymict)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite hunter in Nouadhibou, Mauritania in early March, 2021.

Physical characteristics: Seven dark grayish to brownish fragments without fusion crust.

Petrography: Polymict eucrite composed of up to 2.5 cm sized basaltic, gabbroic and impact melt clasts and up to 2 mm sized mineral fragments embedded in fine-grained clastic matrix. Mineral phases are predominantly diogenetic pyroxene (about 5 vol%), compositionally zoned low-Ca pyroxene, exsolved pyroxene, and calcic plagioclase grains. Minor phases include silica, chromite, ilmenite, troilite, and some olivine. No metallic iron was detected. Contains shock melt veins.

Geochemistry: diogenetic pyroxene: Fs27.4±0.2Wo2.5±0.1 (Fs27.2-27.8Wo2.3-2.7, FeO/MnO=24-28, n=10); zoned low-Ca pyroxene: Fs29.8±7.2Wo2.6±0.4 (Fs22.2-45.2Wo2.1-3.4, FeO/MnO=30-33, n=10); low-Ca pyroxene host to augite exsolution lamellae: Fs58.3±0.6Wo2.4±0.6 (Fs56.9-58.9Wo1.8-4.0, FeO/MnO=30-32, n=9); Ca-pyroxene exsolution lamellae: Fs25.0±1.6Wo44.0±0.7 (Fs23.7-28.0Wo43.1-45.1, FeO/MnO=23-33, n=12); olivine: Fa36.9±0.2, FeO/MnO=47±2, n=12; calcic plagioclase: An91.4±0.9 (An90.0-93.0, n=11)
