Northwest Africa 12494 (NWA 12494)

Purchased: 2018

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, polymict)

History: Purchased at Hamburg Mineral Show Dec. 2018.

Physical characteristics: 160.0 g irregular fragment with cm-sized light irregular patches in a dark gray-green matrix

Petrography: (R. Bartoschewitz, Bart) microgabbroic and basaltic clasts are set in a cumulate basaltic brecciates matrix. Matrix feldspar is partly transformed to maskelynite.

Geochemistry: (R. Bartoschewitz, Bart, P. Appel and B. Mader, Kiel) Pyroxene Fs64.9±0.4Wo2.2±0.4 (n=5), Fe/Mn=30; pigeonite En32Fs60Wo8 (n=1); augite En27-31Fs49-28Wo20-44 (n=8); feldspar An83Or<1 (n=13); ilmenite; SiO2. Kamacite Ni=1.3-7.6, Co=0.8 (n=3); taenite Ni=42.2, Co=0.2 (n=1) (all wt-%). Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 3.17

Classification: Achondrite (polymict eucrite)

Specimens: 20.0 g on deposit at Kiel, Bart holds the main mass.
