Northwest Africa 12756 (NWA 12756)

Purchased: 2019

Classification: HED achondrite (Diogenite)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Grayish, slightly greenish rock with some fusion crust.

Petrography: Fragmental breccia predominantly composed of up to 5 mm sized orthopyroxene crystals set into fine-grained related matrix. Some of the pyroxenes display magmatic zoning. Minor phases include calcic plagioclase, silica, chromite, FeS, and FeNi-sulfides. No metallic Fe has been detected.

Geochemistry: unzoned blocky pyroxene: Fs28.5.0±0.2Wo1.3±0.1 (Fs28.1-28.7Wo1.2-1.4, n=15, FeO/MnO=26-29); magmatically zoned pyroxene: Fs24.3±1.1Wo2.0±0.6 (Fs23.2-26.4Wo1.3-2.8, n=16, FeO/MnO=26-32); olivine: Fa36.1±0.4 (Fa35.4-36.5, n=13, FeO/MnO=47±2); calcic plagioclase: An91.9±3.0 (An85.7-94.7, n=15)
