Northwest Africa 13960 (NWA 13960)

Purchased: 2019 Nov

Classification: HED achondrite (Howardite)

History: Purchased by Ziyao Wang in November 2019 from a dealer in Ouargla, Algeria.

Physical characteristics: The specimen is a eucrite-rich breccia containing sporadic large diogenite clasts (up to 4.8 cm in largest dimension). The overall proportion of diogenite material is difficult to estimate accurately but exceeds 10 vol.%.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) The main breccia portion of the specimen consists predominantly of unexsolved pigeonite (with "mottled" compositional variability), augite and anorthite with accessory silica polymorph, Ti chromite, ilmenite and troilite. Also present are low-Ca pyroxene grains with diogenitic orthopyroxene cores mantled by eucritic pigeonite. The studied large diogenite clast is composed almost entirely of orthopyroxene (exhibiting undulose extinction) with very minor accessory chromite, kamacite, troilite and pentlandite.

Geochemistry: Eucritic pigeonite (Fs47.2-49.3Wo10.7-16.1, FeO/MnO = 27, N = 2), augite (Fs38.4-38.6Wo29.1-35.0, FeO/MnO = 27-31, N = 2), low-Ca pyroxene cores (Fs32.1-36.8Wo5.0-5.3, FeO/MnO = 27-29, N = 2), anorthite (An90.1-93.2Or 0.5-0.2, N = 3). Diogenitic orthopyroxene ( Fs26.4-27.1Wo3.0-3.3, FeO/MnO = 27-32 , N = 5), pigeonite rims (Fs48.7-50.9Wo11.2-14.2, FeO/MnO = 27-29, N = 3).

Classification: Howardite.

Specimens: 38.6 g including polished thin sections of both polymict breccia and a large diogenite clast at UWB; remainder with Mr. A. Zad and WangZ.
