Northwest Africa 12872 (NWA 12872)

Purchased: 2019

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L5, melt breccia)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a Morrocan meteorite dealer on the meteorite fair in Ensisheim, France.

Physical characteristics: Two brownish rocks with some fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a melt breccia and largely consists of partly recrystallized shock melt regions with characteristic FeNi metal and sufide spherules. Unmelted chondritic regions are of type L5 (plagioclase grain size about 30 μm) and contain few relictic chondrules; no metal or sulfide veins are observed.
