Northwest Africa 14482 (NWA 14482)

Purchased: 2021 Jul

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3)

History: Purchased by Shun-Chung Yang in July 2021 from a dealer in Tindouf, Algeria.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, Brown U.) Fairly closely-packed, well-formed chondrules (apparent diameter 920±400 µm, N = 25) containing devitrified glass are set in a fine grained matrix containing troilite, altered kamacite and chromite. A large troilite grain (0.5 mm) is present in the studied thin section.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa26.8±11.2, range Fa8.7-45.2, N = 10; Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.03-0.38 wt.%, mean 0.11±0.11 wt.%, N = 9), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs16.9±9.5Wo1.0±1.1, range Fs0.3-23.4Wo0.4-2.9, N = 5), pigeonite (Fs29.1Wo7.7). Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 4.33.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3).

Specimens: 25.0 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. S.-C. Yang.
