Northwest Africa 14036 (NWA 14036)

Purchased: 2021 Apr

Classification: Mesosiderite

History: The meteorite was purchased from a dealer in Temara, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Dark-brownish rock without fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite displays a brownish interior and is composed of silicate (about 60 vol%) and metallic (about 40 vol%) portions. The silicate fraction is predominantly composed of up to 1.5 mm sized compositionally zoned low-Ca pyroxene, Ca-pyroxene and calcic plagioclase. Ca-pyroxene is present as exsolutions (lamellae and blebs) in low-Ca-pyroxene which also contain abundant sulfide-metal blebs. Minor phases are silica, Ti-chromite, FeS, and merrillite. The metallic lithology is thoroughly altered to Fe-oxides and -hydroxides. Only few kamacite and taenite grains are preserved.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene: Fs29.1±2.2Wo3.4±0.7 (Fs26.9-34.2Wo1.9-4.4, FeO/MnO=23±3, n=14); Ca-pyroxene: Fs16.7±1.7Wo40.5±1.0 (Fs13.0-17.7Wo39.4-42.7, FeO/MnO=17±2, n=6); calcic plagioclase: An93.3±0.2 (An93.0-93.6, n=6)
