Northwest Africa 13178 (NWA 13178) Mali Purchased: 2019 Aug Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3) History: Purchased by Mbark Arjdal in August 2019 from a dealer in Nouakchott, Mauritania. Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Fairly closely packed, small well-formed chondrules (apparent diameter 220±130 µm, N = 23), very fine-grained CAI and mineral fragments are set in a fine-grained matrix (~15 vol.%, orange-brown in thin section). Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa30.5±16.1, range Fa1.2-56.8, N = 14; Cr2O3 in ferroan examples 0.03-0.61 wt.%, mean 0.13±0.16 wt.%, N = 11), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs2.0±1.8Wo2.5±1.5, range Fs0.8-5.0Wo0.9-4.1, N = 5), pigeonite (Fs10.7Wo4.5), diopside (Fs1.1Wo43.8). Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3). Specimens: 27.6 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. M. Arjdal. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
