Tin-Essako 002 (TE 002)        18°28’N, 1°36’E

Gao, Mali

Find: 2020

Classification: Iron meteorite (IIIAB)

History: Reportedly found by people searching for gold in the Tin Essako desert in 2020. Purchased in the same year by Mark Lyon.

Physical characteristics: The 32 kg mass is wedge-shaped with a mostly black surface except for a one dark brown surface ringed by tan caliche. Regmaglypts are present although not prominent.

Petrography: (C. Herd, UAb) Optical examination of a ~3 × 5 cm polished and etched surface reveals a well-developed Widmanstatten pattern with average kamacite bandwidth 1.0±0.2 mm (n=28). No inclusions are apparent. Alteration extends along some grain boundaries into the interior.

Geochemistry: ICP-MS data, using sample of North Chile (Filomena) as standard (C. Herd, P. Hill, and S. DuFrane UAb): Ni = 8.4, Co = 0.520 (both wt%); Ir = 0.6, Ga = 24, Ge = 50, As = 5.7, Sb = 0.05, Pt = 7.0, Cu = 152, Au = 0.75 (all µg/g).

Classification: (C. Herd, UAb): IIIAB iron, medium octahedrite.

Specimens: Type specimen of 42.8 g at UAb. Main mass with Mark Lyon.
