Writeup from MB 111:

Northwest Africa 14957 (NWA 14957)

Mali

Purchased: 2019 Nov

Classification: Iron meteorite (IIIAB)

History: A 1998.7 g end piece was purchased from a dealer in Erfoud in November 2019. The mass is believed to have originated in Mali. The weight of the complete mass is unknown; the remainder of the main mass was reportedly sold to a dealer in China.

Physical characteristics: The uncut surface of the 1998.7 g end piece is blanketed in regmaglypts except for a large heart-shaped recess from which it would appear two adjacent inclusions had been ejected.

Petrography: (C. Herd, UAb) Optical examination of a ~5.5 × 7.5 cm polished and etched surface reveals a well-developed Widmanstätten pattern with average kamacite bandwidth 1.0±0.2 mm (n=50). Some mm-scale troilite inclusions are apparent. Minor alteration extends along a fracture into the interior.

Geochemistry: ICP-MS data, using sample of North Chile (Filomena) as standard (C. Herd, P. Hill, and S. DuFrane UAb): Ni = 7.7, Co = 0.481 (both wt%); Ir = 7.9, Ga = 22, Ge = 42, As = 3.4, Sb = 0.03, Pt = 11.8, Cu = 186, Au = 0.46 (all µg/g).

Classification: (C. Herd, UAb): IIIAB iron, medium octahedrite.

Specimens: Type specimen of 22.3 g at UAb. Main mass with DPitt.
