Alatage Mountain 047 (AM 047)        41.683°N, 92.933°E

Xinjiang, China

Find: 2012 Sep

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L, melt rock)

History: Found by geologist Jianming Wang in September 2012 while they were conducting fieldwork in the Alatage Mountain region, Xinjiang Province, China.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) The specimen retains remnants of a clastic breccia structure, but textural features indicate that it has been pervasively melted. Composed predominantly of extremely fine-grained silicate-rich regions containing sporadic spherical sulfide globules. Silicate-rich regions contain some larger olivine grains, but consist mainly of tiny prismatic grains of olivine and pyroxene (zoned from low-Ca pyroxene cores to subcalcic augite rims) together with interstitial sodic plagioclase and accessory troilite, pentlandite, merrillite, chlorapatite and rare taenite. Kamacite is apparently absent. Sulfide globules are composed of troilite+pentlandite, are in places rimmed by phosphates, and exhibit secondary staining by iron oxides and iron chloride.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa24.2±0.7, range Fa23.2-25.0, N = 5), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs20.4±0.7Wo3.0±0.6, range Fs19.9-21.5Wo2.4=3.9, N = 4), subcalcic augite (Fs14.7±0.2Wo32.4±2.3, range Fs14.6-14.9Wo30.9-35.0, N = 3).

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L-melt rock).

Specimens: 42.8 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with WangZ.
