Writeup from MB 110:
Northwest Africa 14278 (NWA 14278) Morocco Find: 2020 Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L5, melt breccia) History: Purchased in 2020 by Alex Folta from Mohamed el Guirah in Morocco. Physical characteristics: Sample displays dark-brown fusion crust. Silicate clasts appear to have been darkened by shock. Petrography: (D. Sheikh, Cascadia) Sample is a impact melt breccia composed of sub-angular to sub-rounded clasts (up to 2 cm) containing few chondrules (up to 2 mm, n=3), secondary recrystallized feldspar (~ 40 µm, some converted to maskelynite), Fe-Ni metal, and troilite set within a shock melted matrix composed predominantly of impact melt. One Barred Olivine chondrule (~2 mm) found within a clast has been sheared in half along a visible microfault. Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa24.5±0.4, range Fa23.7-25.1, n=10), Low-Ca Pyroxene (Fs21.2±0.7Wo1.6±0.2, range Fs20.4-22.4Wo1.2-1.7, n=11). Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L5-melt breccia). Specimens: 36.1 g and a thin section at Cascadia; 371.3 g main mass with Ralf Simmat. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
