Writeup from MB 89:
Northwest Africa 2042 Morocco Purchased 2003 October Mesosiderite An uncrusted stony-iron meteorite (700 g) with a brown weathered surface was purchased in Erfoud by a Moroccan dealer for DGregory (DGregory) in 2003 October. Classification and mineralogy (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS): Subequal amounts of metal and silicates in a coarse grained plutonic igneous texture. The metal has rounded grains of taenite (30 wt.% Ni) within dominant kamacite (5 wt.% Ni). The remainder of the sample consists mainly of orthopyroxene (Fs26.1Wo2.1- Fs25.7Wo3.9; FeO/MnO = 17.8 - 20.3) and anorthitic plagioclase (An95.8) with accessory chromite, troilite and a silica polymorph. This sample appears to be paired with NWA 1817 and NWA 1878 (see Bunch et al., 2004). Specimens: type specimen, 20 g, UWS; main mass, DGregory. | ||||||||||||||||
