Northwest Africa 10892 (NWA 10892) Mauritania Purchased: April 2016 Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3) History: Found by meteorite hunters during an expedition near the Western Saharan, Algerian and Mauritanian border region. Purchased in Mauritania. Physical characteristics: Weathered exterior A saw cut reveals scattered chondrules and CAIs set in a gray-brown groundmass. Petrography: (C. Agee, UNM) Microprobe examination of a polished mount shows a variety of chondrule types, fine grained, recrystallized groundmass makes up ~60% of this meteorite. Aluminous diopside, aluminous enstatite, and two distinct plagioclase compositions detected; magnetite present. Geochemistry: (C. Agee and M. Spilde, UNM) Olivine Fa29.9±4.7, Fe/Mn=133±14, NiO=0.27±0.13 (wt%), Cr2O3=0.05±0.04 (wt%), n=10; Orthopyroxene Fs1.9Wo6.3, Aluminous diopside Fs4.7±7.4Wo43.2±2.8, Al2O3=6.8±3.7 (wt%) n=5; bytownite An83.4±1.2Ab16.4±1.2Or0.3±0.0, n=2; andesine An39.5±2.1Ab58.4±2.1Or2.2±0.0, n=2. Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3) Specimens: 20.0 g including a probe mount on deposit at UNM, DPitt holds the main mass. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
