Northwest Africa 12796 (NWA 12796)


Purchased: 2013 Sep

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3)

History: Catalogued in the Royal Ontario Museum Collections as LM57472.

Physical characteristics: Fusion crust visible on portions of hand sample. Millimeter-sized chondrules and CAIs visible set in a greenish-yellow matrix.

Petrography: Sample contains 70% fine grained matrix (<10 μm) with some grains in the 100 μm range. The sample contains 15-20% chondrules and CAIs 10%. Average chondrule size is 1 mm in diameter. Chondrules, CAIs and matrix contain plagioclase (plagioclase abundance >10 vol%). Matrix has greenish-yellow colour. Magnetite has an average of 2.2 wt% Cr2O3.

Geochemistry: Olivine is somewhat heterogeneous in the sample (Fa coefficient of variation = 60.8%, Fa PMD = 54.45%). Olivine in the matrix is more fayalitic (Fa34.5) than in chondrules (Fa16.8). Orthopyroxene in the sample is enstatitic in composition, and clinopyroxene ranged from augite to diopside, with the average composition being augite. Plagioclase An42.4±25.6 (N = 28).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3) with minimal weathering and shock.
