Northwest Africa 12836 (NWA 12836)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2019 May

Classification: CK4-6

History: Purchased by Beat Booz in May 2019 from a Moroccan dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Breccia composed of angular clasts and isolated equilibrated chondrules set within a finer grained stained matrix containing Cr-magnetite and pyrrhotite. Clasts are devoid of recognizable chondrules and are metamorphic-textured aggregates composed primarily of olivine, augite, intermediate plagioclase, Cr-magnetite, pentlandite and chlorapatite.

Geochemistry: Discrete chondrules: olivine (Fa32.5±0.7 (range Fa31.5-33.3), N = 7; one magnesian core Fa21.0), pigeonite (Fs21.2Wo11.2), subcalcic augite (Fs12.3Wo30.4). Type 6 clasts: olivine (Fa33.4±0.2 (range Fa33.2-33.6), N = 2), augite (Fs15.3Wo45.3), plagioclase (An69.3Or0.5).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK4-6 breccia).

Specimens: 20.1 g including one polished thin section and one polished mount at UWB; remainder with Mr. B. Booz.
