Northwest Africa 12882 (NWA 12882)

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK6)

History: Marc Jost (SJS) acquired a 1214 g stone from Aziz Habibi at the Munich Mineral show in 2017.

Physical characteristics: The sample has an irregular, tabular shape and appears to show flight-orientation with a broad flow-lined leading edge. The cut face shows the interior has a chondritic texture of dispersed, dark-colored chondrules in a dark brownish green matrix.

Petrography: (Description and Classification A. Love, App) Sample has a chondritic texture showing chondrules and CAIs (up to ~3 mm) set within a recrystallized matrix. Chondrules have an average apparent diameter of 796 μm (n=32) and barred and granular olivine chondrules with igneous rims are dominant. Plagioclase with intermediate composition occurs throughout matrix and has an average long dimension of 64 μm (n=40). Additional minerals are plagioclase, Ca-phosphates and Cr-magnetite containing ilmenite exsolution lamellae and apatite inclusions.

Geochemistry: (A. Love, App) Olivine (Fa30.5±0.2, Fe/Mn=115.7±3.1, mean NiO=0.5, N=12), low Ca pyroxene Fs26.3±0.2Wo0.9±0.1, Fe/Mn=26.2±13.2, N=10), high Ca pyroxene (Fs9.4±0.5Wo48.2±0.3, N=5).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK6) wi-3 C-S2. Based on chondrule size, composition and abundance (~36%) and presence of ubiqiutous CAIs and Cr-magnetite, this is a CK chondrite. Sample is a petrologic type 6 based on equilibrated compositions of chondrules and size of secondary plagioclase.

Specimens: Marc Jost (SJS) hold the main mass. A polished mount, a polished thin section and two slices comprise the 25.7 g type specimen.
