Northwest Africa 12820 (NWA 12820)

Purchased: 2019

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CV3)

History: A single stone weighing 2350 g was purchased in Agadir, Morocco, in March of 2019.

Physical characteristics: Sample is dark-colored, has a rounded tabular and is very friable. 60% of sample is covered by an ablated fusion crust with chondrules and CAIs visible on the uncrusted surface. The cut face shows the interior is composed of reddish-orange chondrules and light-colored CAIs in a dark-grey - black matrix.

Petrography: Description and Classification (A. Love, App) Sample has a chondritic texture composed of ~658 μm (avg. dia., N=38) chondrules, chondrule fragments, abundant CAIs and forsteritic amoeboid olivine aggregates, set within a fine-grained opaque matrix. Additional minerals are spinel, diopside, troilite, magnetite, rare FeNi metal and chromite.

Geochemistry: (A. Love, App) Olivine: Fa3.0±2.4 (Fa0.6-9.5), N=12; low Ca pyroxene: Fs1.6±1.3Wo0.7±0.2 (Fs0.9-4.9Wo0.3-0.9), N=8.

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CV3). Carbonaceous chondrite, based abundance of CAIs and size of chondrules. CV3 based on unequilibrated compositions of chondrules. CV3 C-S3, moderate weathering.

Specimens: Thierry Simard holds the main mass. An endcut weighing 21.22 g and a polished thin section are on deposit at App.
