Ramlat Fasad 541 18°55.162’N, 53°21.235’E Zufar, Oman Find: 2017 Feb 01 Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CV3) History: Found during a search for meteorites. Physical characteristics: Dark brown fragment, well preserved fusion crust on one side, broken surfaces strongly wind-ablated. Petrography: (Åke Rosén, E. Gnos, B. Hofmann) Chondrules and CAIs in dark-brown matrix, chondrules contain brown glass. Typical size of chondrules 0.8-1.5 mm. Matrix and chondrule rims contain metal, troilite and magnetite, partially replacing metal (grains up to 0.5 mm) and sulfide. Unshocked (S1), low weathering. Geochemistry: (Å. Rosén) Olivine Fa3.5±2.1, range Fa0.3-7.0 (N=41). Orthopyroxene Fs1.0±0.2Wo1.0±0.3 (N = 8). Oxygen isotopes: (R. Greenwood, OU) δ18O = -0.261 δ17O = -5.059 Δ17O = -4.923 (all permil). Classification: Based on chondrule size, mineralogy and oxygen isotopes this is a carbonaceous chondrite, type CV3, low weathering, unshocked. Paired with Ramlat Fasad 542 found at a distance of 150 m. Specimens: 6.5 g and one polished thin section at NMBE. Main mass: MHTO. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
