Writeup from MB 110:
Northwest Africa 14135 (NWA 14135) Morocco Purchased: March 2018 Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CV3) History: Purchased by the owner from F. Kuntz in March 2018, via internet. Physical characteristics: The single, 34 g stone is approximately 3 × 2 × 1.5 cm with a dark brown exterior. Well-defined chondrules are evident in slices, as is a dark-gray clast approximately 1 cm across. Petrography: (C. Herd and M. Holt, UAb) Optical and microprobe examination of a polished thin section shows well-defined Fo-rich chondrules up to 3100 μm in diameter, with an average width of approximately 1000 μm. Inclusions within chondrules include Fe-Cr-rich metal and Fe sulfide. Matrix is very fine-grained and comprises ~35% of the sample. A dark inclusion comprises ~20% of the sample and consists of isolated grains of olivine and pyroxene in a fine-grained, clastic matrix. AOAs and CAIs are also present. Geochemistry: (C. Herd and M. Holt, UAb) Data obtained by EMP examination of carbon-coated thin section. Main lithology: Olivine average Fa8.9±13.7, range Fa0.2-44 (n=34); Low-Ca Pyroxene Fs1.6±1.7Wo2.6±3.4 (n=8); High-Ca Pyroxene Fs8.6±9.3Wo39.0±8.7 (n=6). Dark inclusion: Olivine Fa12.6±13.5, range Fa0.3-46 (n=17); Low-Ca Pyroxene Fs9.5±10.8Wo2.8±1.8 (n=13); High-Ca Pyroxene Fs5.2Wo44.1 (n=1). Classification: CV chondrite, CV3 reduced Specimens: Type specimen consisting of 11.32 g piece and a 5.99 g end cut from which thin section was made, is at UAb. Remainder with J. Shea. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
