Northwest Africa 13871 (NWA 13871)

Purchased: 2021 Mar

Classification: Ureilite

History: The meteorite was purchased from a dealer in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Three small brownish fragments without fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite shows a coarse-grained cumulate texture of olivine and pigeonite grains up to 3 mm in sizes. Some pyroxenes contain rounded olivine inclusions. Olivine and pyroxene have reduced Mg-rich rims associated with FeNi-metal or graphite. The meteorite contains flaky graphite and iron oxide veins.

Geochemistry: reduced rims in olivine: Fa3.1-4.8; olivine contains 0.60±0.02 wt% Cr2O3 and 0.32±0.01 wt% CaO; reduced rims in pyroxene: Fs5.0-5.4Wo7.5-8.5; pigeonite contains 1.27±0.05 wt% Cr2O3 and 1.32±0.04 wt% Al2O3
