El Médano 398 (EM 398) 24°51’S, 70°32’W Antofagasta, Chile Find: 2017 Jun 19 Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3) Physical characteristics: Dark stone. Cut surface reveals dark interior and fresh metal. Petrography: Chondrite with small chondrules (~200 μm) set in an abundant fine-grained iron-rich matrix. Opaque minerals are mostly FeNi. Geochemistry: Olivine Fa14.5±5.7, Fa PMD 97%, range Fa0.8-44.5 (n=8). Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.11±0.04 wt% (n=4). Orthopyroxene Fs1.4Wo1.1 (n=1). Defocused matrix analyses FeO 40.0 wt%, total 95.3 wt%. Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 4.38. Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3) Specimens: Type specimen at CEREGE.
