Northwest Africa 13934 (NWA 13934)

Purchased: March, 2021

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a dealer in Mauritania.

Physical characteristics: Four grayish to dark greenish fragments partly covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite displays a grayish to dark greenish interior and is composed of separated and well-defined chondrules (apparent mean diameter about 750 µm) and few CAIs (up to 7 mm) in a fine-grained ferroan matrix. Ni-bearing olivine is the dominating mineral. Less abundant phases include low-Ca pyroxene, Ca-pyroxene, intermediate plagioclase, and FeS. Cr-rich magnetite is abundant; metal was not detected.

Geochemistry: olivine: Fa25.6±9.3 (Fa4.0-31.9, FeO/MnO=111±25; NiO=0.30±0.10 wt%, n=14); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs8.1±8.6Wo1.3±0.5 (Fs1.1-24.0Wo0.8-3.0, n=15); Ca-pyroxene: Fs8.6±3.1Wo49.3±1.7 (Fs7.1-16.2Wo45.3-50.4, n=7); feldspar: An16.8-33.7Ab63.9-78.5Or2.3-4.9±0.4, n=6; magnetite contains 4.06±0.05 wt% Cr2O3, n=3
