Writeup from MB 108:

Northwest Africa 12699 (NWA 12699)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2018

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Erfoud, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Dark brownish rock without fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is composed of sparse well defined chondrules (apparent mean diameter about 600 μm) set into abundant matrix dominated by Fe-rich olivine, plagioclase, and Cr-rich magnetite. Minor phases include low-Ca pyroxene, Ca-pyroxene, and FeNi-sulfides. Olivine and pyroxene appear equilibrated in the matrix and show strong compositional zoning in chondrules and chondrule fragments. The meteorite is a breccia and contains abundant and up to 1 mm wide shock melt veins.

Geochemistry: Fe-rich matrix olivine: Fa32.3±0.4, FeO/MnO=110±8, n=10; unequilibrated olivine: Fa17.0±9.4 (Fa0.9-31.7, n=19); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs9.3±8.5Wo1.3±0.2 (Fs2.2-22.9Wo0.9-1.6, n=7); Ca-pyroxene: Fs10.3±1.0Wo45.0±3.1, n=12
