Writeup from MB 111:
Northwest Africa 12242 (NWA 12242) Algeria Purchased: 2018 May Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3) History: Found in Algeria and purchased by Darryl Pitt in May 2018 from a Mauritanian dealer. Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) Separated, unequilibrated chondrules (apparent diameter 1010±390 µm, N = 17) containing Cr-magnetite and Al-Ti-rich subcalcic augite together with rare fine grained CAI are set in a fine grained matrix (40 vol.%, deep orange in thin section) containing altered Cr-magnetite and calcite. Geochemistry: (S. Kuehner, UWS and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) Olivine (Fa20.6±15.2, range Fa0.3-35.7, N = 8), subcalcic augite (Fs2.1Wo30.0, Al2O3 = 4.7 wt.%, TiO2 = 1.4 wt.%), augite (Fs11.8±3.9Wo49.1±0.5, range Fs7.4-15.1Wo48.6-49.6, N = 5), magnetite (Cr2O3 3.5±0.45 wt.%, range 2.7-3.9 wt.%, N = 9). Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3). The Cr2O3 contents in magnetite are within the range for CK chondrites. Specimens: 20.1 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with DPitt. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
