Northwest Africa 14095 (NWA 14095)

Purchased: 2021 Apr

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CM2)

Physical characteristics: Dark crusted stone. Cut face reveals a dark interior with small chondrules set in an abundant dark matrix.

Petrography: (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE) Chondrite with small chondrules (average apparent diameter 330±150 μm, n=23) set in a abundant fine-grained iron-rich matrix (79 vol% by point counting, n=311). Chondrules have fine-grained dust rims with radial fractures. Opaque minerals are sulfides, magnetite and rare metal enclosed in silicates.

Geochemistry: Olivine Fa10.8±16.0, range Fa2.0-38.5 (n=4). Low-Ca pyroxene Fs1.7Wo2.1 (n=2). Defocused eletron microprobe analyses of the matrix give analytical totals of 76.4 wt% and FeO 30.3 wt%.

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CM2). The low analytical totals in the matrix indicate the presence of hydrous phases.
