Northwest Africa 441 (NWA 441)

Morocco

Purchased: 2019

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3)

History: Purchased in November 2019 by Nick Gessler from an anonymous dealer in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Unusual morphology. Shaped like a wedge of cheese with the central point missing. Top surface is flat and bottom surface is flat and parallel except for some ragged breaks. A third parallel crack bisects the thickness. The sides are quite flat and at right angles to the parallel surfaces. The exterior appears to be entry ablated and wind and sand polished except for the breaks. There is no caliche.

Petrography: (D. Sheikh, FSU) Small chondrules (~150±50 µm) and rare CAI (~100 μm) are set in a dark-colored matrix. Sample contains olivine, orthopyroxene, troilite, Fe-oxides, and rare Fe-Ni metal.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa32.6±14.3, range Fa14.8-52.3, n=15), Low-Ca Pyroxene (Fs3.3±1.6Wo1.4±0.6, range Fs1.2-5.9Wo0.7-2.6, n=21).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3).

Specimens: 22 grams at UCLA; main mass with Nick Gessler.
