Northwest Africa 12930 (NWA 12930)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2018

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3.0)

History: Purchased Dec. 2018 by Dustin Dickens in Morocco from anonymous dealer.

Physical characteristics: Many small, identically appearing pieces. Most pieces are fragmented with partial fresh fusion crust. Broken surfaces are very dark colored with many small chondrules. Scattered, small CAIs are visible throughout.

Petrography: (C. Agee, UNM) Microprobe examination of a polished mount shows numerous small chondrules, opaque matrix makes up approximately 40% of this meteorite. Mean apparent chondrule diameter 150±75 μm, n=27.

Geochemistry: (C. Agee, UNM) Olivine Fa8.0±14.4, Cr2O3=0.36±0.13 (wt%), n=22; low-Ca pyroxene Fs2.3±1.2Wo3.4±0.5, n=9.

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3.0), 3.0 based on the Cr2O3 content and 1-sigma in olivine (Grossman and Brearley, 2005).

Specimens: 8.5 g including a probe mount on deposit at UNM, Dustin Dickens holds the main mass.
