Northwest Africa 4895 (NWA 4895)

Purchased: 2007

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CR2)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Erfoud, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Dark brownish rock without fusion crust.

Petrography: Carbonaceous chondrite composed of abundant large, dominantly porphyritic type I chondrules (apparent mean diameter about 700 µm) set into a fine-grained iron-rich matrix. Few type II chondrules, Fe-rich olivine mineral fragments, and CAIs are present. Type I chondrules often show characteristic metal rims and contain abundant metal blebs. Opaque phases in Type II chondrules are mostly sulfides. Low analytical totals of matrix analyses suggest the presence of hydrous phyllosilicates.

Geochemistry: olivine in type I chondrules: Fa2.2±0.2 (Fa1.7-2.4, Cr2O3: 0.66±0.14 wt%, n=17; low-Ca pyroxene: Fs2.1±0.9Wo1.3±1.1 (Fs1.4-4.4Wo0.4-4.2, n=18); olivine in type II chondrules: Fa33.2±9.7 (Fa23.4-54.5, n=15); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs26.4±2.5Wo2.5±0.7 (Fs23.6-30.6Wo1.9-4.5, n=10). Matrix analyses yield an average total of 82.8±2.7 wt% (5 µm defocused beam, N=7) suggesting the presence of hydrous minerals.
