Writeup from MB 111:

Northwest Africa 14870 (NWA 14870)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2022 Feb

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CR2)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Guelmim, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Many small brownish fragments some of which with minor fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite shows a dark brownish interior and is composed of abundant large metal-decorated type I chondrules (apparent mean diameter about 700 µm) set into a fine-grained ferroan matrix. Few type II chondrules and chondrule fragments but no CAI have been detected. Sulfides are present in type II chondrules and the matrix. Contains rare impact melt fragments.

Geochemistry: olivine in type I chondrules: Fa4.0±1.2 (Fa2.7-6.1, Cr2O3: 0.60±0.06 wt%, n=15; low-Ca pyroxene: Fs6.7±5.4Wo1.2±0.7 (Fs1.8-16.4Wo0.8-3.0, n=8); olivine in type II chondrule: Fa18.9±2.1 (Fa16.7-21.0, n=2). Matrix analyses yield FeO=32.4±1.4 wt% and an average total of 85.2.7±1.1 wt% (5 µm defocused beam, N=6), the latter indicating the presence of hydrous minerals.
