Northwest Africa 14792 (NWA 14792)

Western Sahara

Purchased: 2021

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CR2)

History: Samples were purchased by Adrián Contreras Gómez (CRATER meteorites) from Didi Baidari in October 2021 in Laayoune, Western Sahara.

Physical characteristics: The type specimen is composed of numerous dark colored, angular, cm-sized fragments. Cut face of samples shows chondritic texture with sparse rounded FeNi metal grains.

Petrography: Description and classification (A. Love, App) Sample shows a chondritic texture composed of distributed chondrules set within a dark-colored matrix (~50vol%) containing small FeS grains. FeNi droplets exist within chondrules and rarely as isolated grains within the matrix. Poikilitic pyroxene chondrules are dominant and have an average diameter of 814 μm, n=30. Many chondrules contain and are decorated with rims containing rounded oxidized grains (presumed to be former FeNi) and microchondrules. Additional minerals are: troilite, phosphates and chromite.

Geochemistry: (A. Love, App) Olivine (type I: Fa2.6±1.9, Fe/Mn=22.9±14.5, n=14; type II: Fa14.3±3.2, Fe/Mn=35.7±11.4, n=6); low Ca pyroxene (Fs4.8±3.9Wo1.0±1.0, Fe/Mn=24.2±11.1, n=10). Analytical totals from matrix: 89.4±5.5 wt% suggest hydrous components within matrix.

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CR2, C-S3) Based on chondrule diameter, matrix abundance, presence of metals (implied from weathering products within and surrounding chondrules), lack of CAIs and presence of hydrated components within the matrix, this sample is a CR2.

Specimens: Adrián Contreras Gómez (CRATER Meteorites) holds the main mass. A polished thin section and many small fragments totaling the 20.30 g type specimen are on deposit at App.
