Northwest Africa 14196 (NWA 14196) Morocco Purchased: 2015 Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CV3) History: Purchased by Jay Piatek from a Moroccan meteorite dealer in 2015. Physical characteristics: Twenty identically appearing stones, fresh surfaces reveal mm-sized chondrules set in a dark fine-grained matrix. Scattered CAIs are visible throughout. Petrography: (A. Ross, C. Agee, UNM) This meteorite has primarily porphyritic chondrules with ferroan to forsteritic olivines and enstatitic pyroxenes. Diopside was detected throughout. Fine-grained matrix makes up about 50% of this meteorite. Fe-Ni metal, Cr-poor magnetite, and Fe-sulfide are ubiquitous. Geochemistry: (A. Ross, C. Agee, UNM) chondrule olivine Fa7.7±7.2, Fe/Mn=71±55, Cr2O3= 0.10±0.09 (wt%), n=20; chondrule enstatite Fs1.5±0.7Wo1.0±0.4, n=8. Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite CV3. Specimens: 23 g including a probe mount on deposit at UNM, Jay Piatek holds the main mass. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
