Northwest Africa 14000 (NWA 14000)

Purchased: 2010 Jun

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CVox3)

History: Purchased from a Moroccan mineral dealer at the meteorite show in Ensisheim, France.

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Chondrules, CAIs and AOAs are embedded in a dark fine-grained matrix, which mainly consists of equilibrated Fe-rich olivine (about 40 vol% matrix). Most chondrules have apparent diameters between 0.2 and 1 mm, some up to 3.5 mm. CAIs with sizes up to 4 mm are observed. Type II chondrules are rare. Opaque minerals are Ni-bearing sulfides and Ni-rich metal.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: The mean composition of equilibrated olivine grains in matrix is Fa45.5±1.6 (Fa43.5-48.9; n=10). Random measurements of olivine grains in chondrules and chondrule fragments revealed Fa13.8±12.5 (Fa0.4-42.5); n=22. Random measurements of low-Ca pyroxene in chondrules and chondrule fragments revealed Fs1.5±0.6Wo1.1±0.5 (Fs0.6-3.3Wo0.6-3.0); n=22. Ni concentration in sulfides (wt%): 18.6±3.8; n=7. Ni concentration in metal (wt%): 68.6±0.4; n=5.

Classification: CV chondrite based on CAI and AOA occurrence, apparent sizes of chondrules and CAIs, chondrule-matrix ratio, and mineral chemistry. Petrologic type 3 based on the chemical variation of olivine and pyroxene. Oxidized group (CVOx) due to the rarity of metal and the Ni content of sulfides, and oxidized Allende-like sub-group (CVoxA) due to high Ni in metal (Gattacceca et al., 2020).
