Writeup from MB 110:
Northwest Africa 13749 (NWA 13749) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2018 Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CVred3) History: Acquired by Geologist Juan Aviles Poblador on behalf of UAlic during the winter of 2018 from a meteorite dealer in Talsint, Morocco. Physical characteristics: Single stone with dark-brown fusion crust. Petrography: (D. Sheikh, FSU) Specimen is composed of well-defined chondrules (Av. ~1.2 mm, 50 vol%) and calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions set in an opaque matrix composed of Fe-Ni metal and Ni-poor sulfides (<1 Ni wt%, n=5) (Matrix vol%=55%). Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa5.7±9.9, range Fa0.4-63.5, n=42), Low-Ca Pyroxene (Fs2.5±2.1Wo1.4±0.9, range Fs1.0-7.5Wo0.7-3.7, n=18). Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CVred3). The mineral compositions and texture indicate classification as a CV3. The presence of Fe-Ni metal combined with the low Ni content of sulfides (<1 Ni wt%, n=5) indicate classification to the reduced group of CV3 chondrites (Gattacceca et al. (2020)). Specimens: 10 grams at UCLA, main mass with Geologist Juan Aviles Poblador. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
