Antofagasta, Chile

Find: 2018 Oct 16

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H5)

History: The meteorite (one piece) was found on October 16, 2018, by Ilya Chaplygin during a desert search organized by Timur Kryachko.

Physical characteristics: Single stone 224.5 g of angular shape with uneven, shiny dark-brown surface. No fusion crust was observed. Fresh cut reveals dark-brown interior with abundant chondrules and no visible metal. Bottom part is covered with pinkish light-colored desert dust.

Petrography: (Pavel Yu. Plechov, FMMR). Petrographic observation of a polished section shows that main part of the meteorite contains many clear pronounced chondrules. Chondrules sizes vary from 200 to 500 µm with rare large chondrules (up to 1500 µm). Plagioclase grains (An9.6-13.9) are about 10-50 µm. These features indicate a petrological type of 5 for the meteorite. Olivine has no undulatory extinction, as well as the absence of opaque shock veins and melt pockets indicates a shock stage of S1. Silicates are not weathered, and troilite is almost fresh whereas metal is significantly oxidized (weathering grade, W2).

Geochemistry: Mineral composition and Geochemistry: EDS analyses (Pavel Yu. Plechov, FMMR). The primary chondrite paragenesis includes olivine Fa18.49±0.47 (N=17), Low-Ca pyroxene Fs16.0±0.6Wo0.94±0.12 (N=7), plagioclase Ab83.5An11.8Or4.3 (N=2), clinopyroxene En50.0Fs5.4Wo44.7. Phosphate is Cl-apatite. Troilite is close to ideal stoichiometry.

Classification: (Pavel Yu. Plechov, FMMR). Ordinary chondrite. H5, S1, W2.

Specimens: Ilya Chaplygin holds main mass about 200 g. 31.8 g and thin section, FMMR.
