Northwest Africa 12973 (NWA 12973)


Purchased: 2019 Mar

Classification: HED achondrite (Diogenite, anomalous)

History: Found in Tunisia in January 2019 and purchased in Agadir, Morocco by Aziz Habibi in March 2019.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Protogranular texture with prominent triple grain junctions. The major constituent is orthopyroxene, but there are domains of polycrystalline olivine (~5 vol.% overall). Spherical vesicles (empty, up to 3 mm in diameter) are present. Accessory phases include clinopyroxene, V-bearing chromite and troilite, plus minor secondary calcium sulfate and barite.

Geochemistry: Orthopyroxene (Fs23.6-23.8Wo3.9-3.5, FeO/MnO = 28-31, N = 4), olivine (Fa28.6-29.0, FeO/MnO = 48-53, N = 3), clinopyroxene (Fs11.2Wo42.9, FeO/MnO = 22).

Classification: Diogenite (anomalous, vesicular, olivine-bearing). The prominent vesicles in this specimen are an anomalous feature.

Specimens: 21.9 g including one polished thin section and one polished mount at UWB; remainder with Mr. A. Habibi.
