Northwest Africa 14739 (NWA 14739)

Purchased: 2021 Nov

Classification: HED achondrite (Diogenite, melt breccia)

History: Purchased by Aziz Habibi in November 2021 from a dealer in Guelmim, Morocco.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) The meteorite consists predominantly of a fine grained, gray quenched melt rock lithology of diogenitic composition plus sparse gabbroic clasts of eucritic composition (up to 2 cm across). Eucritic material comprises < 10 vol.% of the specimen overall. The dominant diogenitic lithology (in part vesicular) consists of very fine grained, acicular orthopyroxene with accessory kamacite, pentlandite and troilite, and encloses angular clasts of diogenitic orthopyroxene, olivine, calcic plagioclase and some eucritic pyroxenes. A gabbroic eucrite clast in the studied endcut is composed predominantly of exsolved pigeonite and calcic plagioclase.

Geochemistry: Orthopyroxene (Fs20.4-24.1Wo1.2-1.3, FeO/MnO = 24-30, N = 2; Fs35.6-38.4Wo3.4-2.1, FeO/MnO = 31-33, N = 2), olivine (Fa11.9-18.6, FeO/MnO = 39-43, N = 3), eucritic low-Ca pyroxene (Fs52.2-65.1Wo3.0-6.5, FeO/MnO = 31-34, N = 3), eucritic augite (Fs31.8Wo43.4, FeO/MnO = 33), pigeonite (Fs30.0Wo14.4, FeO/MnO = 31), eucritic plagioclase (An75.6Or1.7), anorthite (An91.4-93.4Or0.2-0.1, N = 2).

Classification: Diogenite (melt rock matrix breccia with eucrite clasts).

Specimens: 21.4 g in the form of a polished endcut at UWB; remainder with Mr. A. Habibi.
