Northwest Africa 14683 (NWA 14683)

Purchased: 2020

Classification: HED achondrite (Diogenite, olivine)

History: Purchased January, 2020 by Mark Lyon from a northwest African dealer

Physical characteristics: Many stones partially covered in black fusion crust. Interior of sample shows a brecciated interior of medium to coarse pyroxene grains. A few scattered darker grains are also visible.

Petrography: (A. Ross, UNM; D. Dickens, NMMS; C. Agee, UNM) Examination of polished probe mount shows pyroxene is the dominant mineral in this meteorite. Pyroxenes are very uniform with no zoning observed. Olivine grains are scattered throughout and are relatively uniform in chemical composition. Small sparsely distributed plagioclase (labradorite) grains were observed enclosed in larger olivine grains. Opaque phases were mostly chromite, with rare troilite and ilmenite present. A single very small kamacite grain embedded in chromite, a single pentlandite grain, and a single Cu+Zn grain were also observed.

Geochemistry: (A. Ross, UNM) Olivine Fa26.5±2.6, Fe/Mn=51±1, n=6; low-Ca pyroxene Fs19.9±0.7Wo3.0±0.8, Fe/Mn=31±3, n=3; plagioclase An52.81.

Classification: Diogenite (olivine-bearing)

Specimens: 27.5g including a probe mount on deposit at UNM, Mark Lyon holds the main mass.
