Northwest Africa 12519 (NWA 12519)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2017 Feb

Classification: HED achondrite (Diogenite, polymict)

History: Purchased by John Higgins in February 2017 from a dealer in Laayoune, Morocco.

Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) Breccia composed predominantly of angular mineral clasts derived from several diogenitic lithologies plus ~5 vol.% eucrite clasts in a finer grained matrix of related debris. Minerals are orthopyroxene (of at least two different compositions), olivine, anorthite, chromite, troilite, exsolved pigeonite, bytownitic plagioclase and silica polymorph.

Geochemistry: Diogenitic orthopyroxene (Fs20.9Wo1.8; Fs28.8Wo3.3; FeO/MnO = 25-29; N = 2), olivine (Fa45.7-53.5, FeO/MnO = 55-57, N = 2), anorthite (An93.7Or0.2), orthopyroxene host (Fs45.7-48.5Wo2.9-2.7; Fs63.3Wo4.8; FeO/MnO = 29-31; N = 3), clinopyroxene exsolution lamellae (Fs20.0-20.4Wo42.7-43.3, FeO/MnO = 25-28, N = 2), plagioclase (An85.1Or0.9).

Classification: Diogenite (polymict breccia).

Specimens: 12.6 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. J. Higgins.
