Northwest Africa 12574 (NWA 12574)

Purchased: 2013

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L5)

History: Reportedly found near Ait’ Hani in May 2012 by Mustapha Oulkouch, purchased by Dustin Dickens in September 2013 at Goulmima, Morocco, later purchased by Topher Spinnato on January 19, 2019.

Physical characteristics: Single stone, dark brown, desert weathered exterior; one side shows smoothed entry orientation. Saw-cut surfaces show numerous chondrules set in a dark brown to reddish-brown groundmass.

Petrography: (C. Agee, UNM) Microprobe examination of a polished mount shows mostly porphyritic chondrules set in a recrystallized groundmass; some chondrules are fragmental. Plagioclase grains are ubiquitous with sizes up to 25 μm in diameter. Pervasive Fe-oxide veinlets throughout.

Geochemistry: (C. Agee UNM) Olivine Fa23.9±0.4, Fe/Mn=49±2, n=23; low-Ca pyroxene Fs20.2±0.2Wo1.2±0.2, Fe/Mn=28±1, n=11.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite L5

Specimens: 23.75 g including a probe mount on deposit at UNM, Topher Spinnato holds the main mass.
