Northwest Africa 10245 (NWA 10245)

Morocco

Purchased: 2014

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite)

Petrography: This sample is composed of fine-grained pyroxene (49%), plagioclase (42%), silica (8%), chromite, ilmenite, metal, troilite, and zircon. Coesite and shock-induced melt veins are present. Coesite was identified based on its chemical composition and Raman shift at 521 cm-1.

Geochemistry: Compositions of low-Ca pyroxene and high-Ca pyroxene are En37.3±0.8Fs60.5±1.1Wo2.2±0.7 (n=9) and En30.4±0.6Fs26.8±0.8Wo42.8±1.0 (n=8), respectively. Both pyroxenes and contain exsolution lamellae. The average Fe/Mn value of pyroxene is 31.3±1.7. The average composition of plagioclase is An88.7±0.8Ab10.8±0.6.
