Northwest Africa 12863 (NWA 12863)

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite)

History: Catalogued in the ROM collection as LM58157

Physical characteristics: Heavily weathered fusion crust present, beige to brown in color. Cracks in the fusion crust filled in with caliche or oxides. Interior of sample is intact, but weathered as well, with caliche covering 50% of the surface. Where visible the interior of the meteorite is light grey, with some larger grey to black clasts visible.

Petrography: (K.Tait, I. Nicklin, ROM) Breccia composed of basaltic to gabbroic clasts with mineral fragments and shards of dark melt-glass set in a very finely grained comminuted matrix.  The largest clast is 4 × 3 mm.  Mineral fragments show variable shock stages ranging from undulous extinction to mild mosaicism.

Geochemistry: Mineral composition and geochemistry: Plagioclase An87.8±3.4 (n = 30). Low-Ca pyroxene composition: Fs39.5±3.4Wo9.5±4.7 (n=27). Mg#33.4-49.6 (n=27).
