Northwest Africa 14244 (NWA 14244) Morocco Purchased: March 2015 Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite) History: T. Mikouchi purchased the meteorite from a Moroccan dealer Physical characteristics: A single rounded stone of 15.4 g, ~80% covered with fresh black fusion crust. Petrography: (T. Mikouchi: UTok) Monomict breccia consisting of basaltic clasts with ophitic to subophitic textures with abundant shock melt veins. The sizes of pyroxene and plagioclase are up to 2 mm and both minerals show undulatory extinction. Augite exsolution lamellae in low-Ca pyroxene and vice versa (~10 micromemters wide). Plagioclase is partly transformed to maskelynite. Accessory phases are a silica polymorph, ilmenite, chromite, and traces of troilite and Ni-poor Fe metal. Geochemistry: Pyroxenes are low-Ca pyroxene (Fs57.1-65.1Wo1.5-11.5, N=225) and augite (Fs26.3-39.5Wo29.9.9-45.4, N=35). Wt% FeO/MnO of low-Ca pyroxene is 26-40. Plagioclase is An92.1-85.9Or0.3-0.9 (N=50). Classification: Eucrite (monomict breccia) Specimens: A 12.26 g type specimen is on deposit at UTok. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
