Northwest Africa 14246 (NWA 14246) Morocco Purchased: May 2021 Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite) History: T. Mikouchi purchased the meteorite from a US dealer Physical characteristics: A single irregular-shaped stone of 67.75 g showing dark surface color without fusion crust. Petrography: (T. Mikouchi: UTok) Mostly unbrecciated coarse-grained (up to 2 mm) pyroxene and plagioclase with subequal modal abundances. Small portions of brecciated areas containing mineral and lithic clasts of pyroxene and plagioclase are present. Rare diogenitic orthopyroxne fragments (up to 0.5 mm) are present in the brecciated portion. Both pyroxene and plagioclase show undulatory extinction. Accessory phases are Fe sulfide, ilmenite, and a rare silica polymorph. Geochemistry: Most pyroxenes are low-Ca pyroxene (Fs17.4-53.4Wo1.5-24.2, N=532) and rare augite (Fs28.1-34.0Wo25.9-35.0, N=11) is present. Wt% FeO/MnO of low-Ca pyroxene is 24-42. Plagioclase is An94.9-80.3Or0-1.5 (N=239). Classification: Eucrite (polymict breccia) Specimens: A 67.27 g type specimen is on deposit at UTok. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
