Northwest Africa 12669 (NWA 12669) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2018 Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite) History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Laayoune, Mauritania. Physical characteristics: Three grayish rocks with patches of fusion crust. Petrography: The meteorite displays a grayish to light-greenish interior and is a breccia composed of up to 3 cm sized basaltic and impact melt clasts set into a fine-grained clastic matrix. Mineral phases are predominantly pyroxene with fine exsolution lamellae and calcic plagioclase with average grain sizes of about 80 μm. Minor phases include silica, ilmenite, chromite, troilite, and zircon. No metallic iron was detected. Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene: Fs52.4±1.2Wo4.7±1.4 (Fs49.7-53.9Wo3.2-6.4, n=15, FeO/MnO=29-36); Ca-pyroxene: Fs28.0±0.6Wo39.7±0.5 (Fs27.3-29.6Wo38.2-40.7, n=13, FeO/MnO=28-33); calcic plagioclase: An87.9±7.7 (An70.2-94.5, n=17) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
